UNHRC
Human Trafficking in Mediterranean Routes
Every year, thousands of individuals cross the Mediterranean Route in search of something that many others take for granted; safety. For those traveling along the Central Mediterranean Route from North Africa toward Europe, however, the journey does not end once they reach the shore. Refugees and asylum seekers fleeing war, persecution, and instability can find themselves trapped in a second crisis, becoming targets of human traffickers and criminal networks that exploit and expose their vulnerability. Promises of safe passage, employment, or financial assistance can very quickly turn into forced labor, sexual exploitaton, extortion, and wide range of other forms of abuse. With limited legal pathways, political instability, and fragmented protection systems, the same journey intended to lead ton safety can instead expose displaced people to some of the most severe violations to their human rights. This crisis raises a difficult question for the international community. How can the world protect those who have already lost their homes without allowing their search for safety to become another opportunity for exploitation? In this UNHCR committee, delegates will confront this dillema and work toward strengthening international cooperation, protecting vulnerable refugees, and dismantling the networks that profit from human suffering.
